Mixed media by local artist Deyanira Chavez

Deyanira Chavez was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States at the age of 12.  Chavez threw herself into learning and distinguished herself as an excellent student.  She attended the University of North Carolina Charlotte, as part of the architecture program, but was forced to quit school when her scholarships ran out.  Undeterred, Chavez is currently attending Blue Ridge Community College, and still plans on achieving her goal of becoming an architect.

Visit Chavez's website to learn more about her story.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 10 from 6-8 p.m., with a gallery talk scheduled for 7 p.m.

The exhibit will be on display September 4 - 29.

Artist's Statement

Drawing for me is an exploration of form, space, composition, balance and materials that can transform into emotions.  It is another language that offers peace, tranquility and joy, in a place with no time where I can submerge and make discoveries.  A drawing does not have to be paper and pencil.  Working with charcoal has given me the desire to explore other materials.
