Collections with Religious Content

Special Collections includes a number of collections that document religion, religious organizations, and religious life in Asheville and Western North Carolina. All of these collections are available for research. 

Agudas Israel Synagogue Collection -  Materials covering the history of the congregation and Jewish families in Hendersonville, NC. The collection includes primary and secondary documents, oral histories and photographs.

Beth HaTephila Congregation -  Congregation Beth HaTephila, the first synagogue in Asheville, was founded on August 16, 1891. This collection contains papers of the Asheville Jewish congregation, correspondence of Rabbi Sidney Unger, and other core documents.

Robert F. Campbell Papers - The personal papers of Robert F. Campbell primarily documenting his career as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Asheville, N.C. from 1892 to 1946 and, to a lesser extent, his research and writing on social issues, particularly race in the South and the social and cultural lifestyle of the people of Appalachia.

Congregation Beth Israel PapersThe collection includes documents covering synagogue activities, minutes of meetings, photographs, plans for construction of the synagogue, the activities of the Synagogue Sisterhood and Board of Trustees, and some financial records.

Margaret Deaver Collection of Presbyterian Newsletters - Contains one digitized 1930 issue of "The Appalachian Appeal" the "Official Home Mission Organ of the Synod of Appalachia" and selected digitized pages from "Our Mountain Work." 

Jewish Life in Western North Carolina - An index linking to the nearly 30 different Jewish collections located in UNC Asheville's Special Collections. Includes oral histories, manuscript collections, and photograph collections. 

Judaica Collection - A small collection of miscellaneous publications and works related to Jewish studies.

Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville Collection - A collection of photographs, documents and other material related to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville.
