Using the Library: Guest Borrowers

Join

Members of the public are welcome to use the library collections in-house. Those interested in having borrowing privileges from Ramsey Library, but who are not affiliated with the University, may still borrow print materials by obtaining a Guest Borrower's Card. Any resident of North Carolina eighteen years or older can purchase a library card. Proof of eligibility is required by presentation of a valid North Carolina driver’s license (or a valid North Carolina state issued picture ID). To join as a Guest Borrower, go to the Circulation Services Desk and fill out a membership form. The cost of the membership is an annual fee of $18. If you are a UNCA graduate you are entitled to borrowing privileges with no annual fee.

Benefits

Your Guest Borrower's Card entitles you to check out up to 10 print materials at a time. The card in nontransferable and must be presented to check out items. The normal loan period is 30 days, although this may be shorter if the expiration of the card is prior to the end of the loan period.

The card provides borrowing privileges for:

Loan Period
General Collection 30 days
New Books 30 days
Juvenile Literature 30 days
Government Documents 30 days

The card does NOT provide:
ABC Express, Interlibrary Loan, DVD/VHSs and CDs, Software, Reserves, Journals and Current Periodicals, Curriculum Materials, Audio/Visual Equipment, and Off-campus access to electronic databases.

All check out/renewal privileges are blocked when the amount owed in fines/fees reaches or exceeds $1.00.

Renew/Return Items

Renew Items
You may bring materials with your borrower’s card to the Circulation Services Desk for renewal. You can also renew your print materials twice online. The cut-off date for online renewals is the due date of the item. After this time, items must be brought to the Circulation Services Desk for renewal. Recalled books cannot be renewed.

Return Items
Materials may be returned to the Circulation Services Desk or to the book drops outside the entrance of Ramsey Library, on University Heights next to Zeis Hall or by mail to: Circulation Services Desk; One University Heights Ramsey Library CPO # 1500; Asheville NC 28804-8504.

The library is located on the university quadrangle in the center of the UNC Asheville campus.
